Mphanga Holdings Limited, a plastic fittings and pipe producer in Lilongwe, has launched an environment-friendly and termite-proof grain granary known as Mphankhonkwe.
The company’s marketing and public relations manager Uthant Chaula said in an interview on Tuesday the product, manufactured after many years of careful research, is an improved plastic imitation of the traditional bamboo granary prone to attacks by termites.
Made up of a special plastic called Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) from the supporting poles to the roof, Chaula said the granary removes the burden on the people of having to construct one time and again to store grain.
“This nkhokwe is fire and termite proof,” said Chaula. “In other words it does not rust.”
He said the granary is available to the market in different sizes as demanded by the customer. Chaula said the granary is Mphanga Holdings’ attempt to help fight environmental degradation that has created man-made semi-deserts across the country.
He said the product has long term benefits to the communities and the environment. Government, together with international development partners, are spending a lot of money running projects aimed at educating the masses to preserve nature.
The company also unveiled a new manual pump able to drive water up to tanks mounted on roofs of houses, ready for domestic use. Chaula said the pump has enough pressure to carry water as long as 400 metres on land surface.
“Despite all these attributes, the price of the pump is very low and its easy to maintain in case of a breakdown,” he said.
