Munthali to miss Bullets match
by Frazer Nazombe, 20 August 2003 - 16:49:00
MDC United’s striker Heston Munthali has ruled himself out of their inaugural BP Top 8 match against Bakili Bullets this Saturday at Chichiri Stadium following the injury he sustained during the Cosafa Castle Cup semifinal clash between Malawi and Zambia played at the same venue.
Munthali, who was knocked below the ribcage by his team-mate Peter Mgangira because of a communication breakdown, was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in an ambulance.
“I was only given a drip and given a bed in ward 5A without further attention because the doctors and nurses were busy changing shifts,” said Munthali.
“Then I was given an injection which put me into deep sleep and knew the rest of the events through a friend.”
Munthali said the national team came to the hospital to see him later on and not satisfied with his treatment, South Africa-based Patrick Mabedi called the Minister of Sports Henderson Mabeti who rushed to the hospital with Fam vice president Sameer Suleiman immediately.
“I am told they arranged for my transfer to Malamulo but there the doctor was not available until Tuesday and they decided to take me to Mwaiwathu where I got better treatment,” he said.
Munthali was discharged on Sunday afternoon.
“There is great improvement because there was a swelling below the ribs and I could not breathe properly but I am not fit to play the BP Top Eight match this weekend,” he said.
