Entertainment
Fun house under fire
by Patrick Msowoya, 20 August 2003 - 09:33:23
Officials from the Housing Department have ordered owners of the newly opened and famous entertainment place in Mzuzu, Recreation Centre to vacate the place barely four months after its opening.
A letter from the Regional Housing Office in Mzuzu dated 14 July, 2003 and signed by G. Manda advised the owners of the place, Chibisa Estate Agents, to vacate the building before August 31, 2003 so that government takes back control of the house.
“Despite any expenses you might have met towards the building, the position is still that you are an illegal occupier and as such you should move out of the premises. I therefore give you up to August 31, 2003 to yield up the property,” reads part of the letter.
The letter further states that the action by Chibisa Estate Agents to occupy the “said public place” without authority from government clears any claim of damages incurred in the process of massive renovations.
Despite all this pressure, owners of the entertainment centre still claim legitimacy over the building, saying they signed a concrete agreement with the Recreation Centre executive committee for them to occupy the building.
“We wonder because we signed an agreement with Buildings Department under the same Ministry of Housing and we are now not sure who to obey on this issue,” said manager for the joint Edlex Nyondo.
A letter for tenancy offer dated May 22, 2003 and signed by the Buildings Committee chair F. Kamphandira and sourced by Nation Online indicates that Chibisa Estates Agents were given full approval to occupy the building by the Buildings Department.
“We were convinced beyond reasonable doubt that whatever the committee told us was sanctioned by the Regional Housing Office from which the Building Department Recreation Committee originates,” said Nyondo.
Initially government owned and managed the building but was on the verge of collapse when the new present occupiers came in.
