Those who saw Kelvin Maigwa beating drums or grabbing a microphone from Mlaka Maliro at Busibodies Entertainment Centre in Area 18, Lilongwe on Sunday, proved that the police inspector is not just a policeman but a good musician as well.
Maigwa who works as assistant public relations officer at the Police Headquarters in Lilongwe, first appeared as a guest drummer at the beginning of the show around 9 PM before Mlaka handed him a microphone later during the show.
Mic in hand, Maigwa played an extended version of one of Mlaka’s old songs which he fused with some tracks from late Allan Namoko leaving the revellers with no choice but leave their cold ones to twist their bodies in appreciation.
Maigwa has just produced a 10-track debut album on CD entitled Ujeni Musandipitilire and is already on the market.
As if he had not surprised the patrons enough, the policeman changed the tempo a few minutes later and went back on stage this time to hit drums to Kwasakwasa and Ndombolo beats by his former band mate in the now rejuvenated Mlangeni Sounds— Paul Pasulani.
When he jumped off stage, the few who knew that he was a police officer shouted “Wa Polisi!”(he is a policeman) in appreciation.
However, when he took over the stage, Mlaka showed Maigwa, Robert Piyo and Francis Dangoman Kadango (who also played) his superiority when he almost commanded the whole crowd into a dance. It was the hit of the moment Kamandidusadusa from his latest album Musalire that was the toast of the night.
Unlike in other shows where people have accused Mlaka of coming late and drunk on stage, on this day the artist was at his sober best and played almost all his popular tracks from his new and old albums. |
