The Malawi national darts team, which is expected to leave the country next week for Lesotho’s capital Maseru to participate in this year’s Zone VI Darts Championship, has sent out an SOS for financial assistance to enable the 22-member squad make the trip.
Team manager Palije Nyirenda said the Malawi team, ranked one of the best in the region, has so far raised about K217,000 which is over K500,000 less of the required budget.
“We approached the Ministry of Sports but we could not get any assistance because they said their coffers are dry, but we are not moving an inch backwards. We are appealing to well-wishers and organisations to help us financially,” said Nyirenda.
He added: “Having finished third last year, our eyes are now firmly set on winning gold this year and do our nation proud.”
Nyirenda also said due to the big shortfall, players and officials have been asked to contribute K10,000 towards the cause.
Meanwhile, one of the country’s biggest supermarkets, Shoprite on Thursday donated K20,000 to the Darts Association of Malawi (Dam) towards the cause.
The company’s financial controller Oladipo Adelusi said during a brief cheque presentation ceremony held at Chichiri shopping mall that the donation was made to ensure Malawi’s participation at the regional event.
“It is also part of our social responsibility to assist in the development of sports in the country. We hope that the darts team will bring gold from the tournament,” said Adelusi.
And speaking on behalf of Dam, Nyirenda thanked the company for the timely donation and asked other companies and organisations to emulate its gesture.
The Zone VI Darts Championship will be held from August 25 to 30.
