After a two-year drought of boxing in the North, Sun Village Boxing Promotion will this Sunday stage both amateur and professional bouts at Mzuzu Stadium.
“This will be the first big tournament ever staged in the region,” manager of the outfit Lada Chimbalanga said in a telephone interview.
According to Chimbalanga, the day-long tournament will be free and is expected to draw a huge crowd from all corners of the region.
He said the aim of the tournament is to promote both amateur and professional boxers.
“What is most interesting is that amateur boxing coach, Anderson Kazembe will be present to spot best boxers who in the near future can represent the nation at international level,” the promoter explained.
In the main fight Pepecho Mkandawire, who trekked to the South in 2001 after failing to secure sponsorship in the North and turned professional the same year, will fight his ninth professional bout when he takes on Moze Mahilasi in a non-title ten rounder.
“There will be several supporting (over 12) bouts before the main fight. The boxers have been drawn from the South, Centre and hosts Northern Region,” Chimbalanga said.
Chimbalanga said the winner will walk away K4,000 richer and the loser K3,000 in professional bouts while amateur winners and losers will pocket K200 and K100 respectively.
Kazembe has since commended Chimbalanga for his keen interest in promoting boxing in the country.
“I wished other individuals, companies, organisations had emulated the example shown by Chimbalanga,” he said.
