Workers give govt ultimatum
by McCarthy Mwalwimba, 18 July 2003 - 14:58:38

Former employees of the dissolved Multi-Country Training Centre (MCTC) have given government up to next Wednesday to pay them their terminal benefits or else they will seek legal advice.
The former workers made the resolution on Wednesday when they met to discuss the way forward to ensure they receive their benefits. They said government has failed to meet its promise that they would be paid by June 1.
They said under section 53 of the Labour Relations Act which states that wages and remuneration due to an employee on the termination or completion of his [or her] contract of employment shall be paid within seven days after its termination or completion, their rights were being violated.
The employees then agreed to petition the government through MCTC’s board. They said the petition will be presented on Monday at an extraordinary meeting of board members in Lilongwe.
“They have to consider the psychological torture we are suffering. We are failing to meet our daily needs due to lack of money,” lamented Wellace Kayimira, chair of the concerned employees, saying some of them have had their children chased from school for lack of fees while others were evicted from their houses for failing to pay rent.
Information Minister Bernard Chisale could not be reached by phone but was quoted last month as saying the former employees would be paid using the money from the sale of the institution to Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL).
When contacted, acting Secretary for Information George Mwale declined to comment.
MCTC was closed on March 31 this year after Bostwana and Swaziland pulled out from the four-nation partnership, leaving Malawi and Lesotho.
