Nico Holdings Limited and Blantyre City Assembly in conjunction with Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) are leaving no stone unturned in the preparations for a big fun run and marathon race slated for July 26.
Nico’s administrative secretary Ruth Kwizombe said the race is one of the biggest sports events that her company is sponsoring to the tune of K500,000.
“We want to make this an annual event that will attract people from all walks of life,” said Kwizombe.
AAM publicity secretary Mzee Makawa, who is also a member of the organising committee, said the fun run and the serious marathon race will have participants from all regions of the country.
“Those who want to participate should register at our AAM offices, Blantyre Youth Centre, Zomba Community Centre, Kamuzu Institute for Sports and the regional sports development office in the North,” said Makawa.
Makawa said runners, who are above 20 years of age qualify for the competition and they are required to have their fitness certified by a medical centre at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
“That means top class runners like Catherine Chikwakwa who is below 20 will not take part,” he said.
In the serious marathon race the winner will cart home K30,000,(about US $330) runner-up K20,000 and the third placed racer will get K15,000 in the men’s category while in the women’s meet the winner will get K15,000, runner-up K10,000 and K8,000 for third place.
In the men’s competition there will be cash prizes ranging from K8,000 to K1,000 for the fourth position to number 20 while in the women’s category number four to 10 will get between K5,000 and K1,000.
There will also be a race for people with disabilities who will be in three categories: tricycle, wheel chair and visually impaired and they will win cash prizes ranging from K1,000 to K500.
“They will get those prizes because they will cover a short distance from Nico House to Chichiri Stadium and those who will take part in the fun run will receive handouts such as umbrellas, caps, and T-shirts,” Makawa said.
