Salima population growth on fast lane
by Joseph Langa, 15 July 2003 - 08:45:54
Population in Salima is growing faster than the whole country, Health and Population Minister Yusuf Mwawa has said.
Mwawa made the revelation on Saturday when he presided over events commemorating the World Population Day at Salima Community Centre ground.
He said this was why the district was chosen to host the activities that included a big walk, displays by organisations dealing with reproductive health issues such as Banja La Mtsogolo, Population Services International (PSI) and Family Planning Association of Malawi, among others.
Mwawa also advised people in the district to use modern methods of family planning, saying old beliefs of family planning no longer work in the modern age.
“In the past women used to wear a traditional medicine string in the waist and it may have worked for them to control the birth of children, but this is no longer the case in this modern day,” said Mwawa.
He told the gathering that resources in the country can no longer support the high population.
The minister also advised youths in the district not indulge in unprotected sex, saying their age group is badly affected by HIV/Aids and teenage pregnancies.
This year’s World Population Day was targeting the youth with its theme ‘Adolescent Reproductive Health: The Call for Active Youth Participation’.
The displays mounted by organisations like BLM included various methods of family planning and activities they do targeting the youth.
Among the dignitaries who attended the function were UNFPA resident representative Charlotte Gardiner, Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture Henderson Mabeti, government officials and Miss Malawi Mable Pullu.
