Bandits raid police station
by Peter Makossah, 02 July 2003 - 08:00:16
A gang of unidentified hard-core bandits Monday night invaded Luwelezi Police Station in Mzimba and stole three guns with 42 rounds of live ammunition.
The bandits, who caught the law enforcers off-guard and sent jitters to police authorities both at the station and at the Northern Regional Police Headquarters, stole two .303 Mark 4 rifles and a Sub-Machine Gun (SMG) together with 42 rounds of live ammunition.
Police public relations officer George Chikowi confirmed the raid on Tuesday in an interview, saying police have since arrested four people who are being suspected of involvement in the invasion.
“It true that a group of unidentified thugs stole three guns, two of which are the police’s traditional rifles, .303 Mark 4 rifles, with 20 rounds of live ammunition and a Sub-Machine Gun alongside 22 rounds of ammunition,” said Chikowi.
He added: “We are on the ground with intensified investigations. We are making steady progress on the issue and we have so far arrested four people who we believe will lead us to the recovery of the stolen rifles, which we feel are a menace to the national security.”
The police publicist however refused to give the details of the four suspects, saying that doing so would jeopardise the ongoing investigations.
“Giving the details of the arrested suspects would retard the investigation process. The four I am sure will help us make headway in our investigation and this is a very delicate and sensitive issue, which concerns the interest of national security,” he said.
In March this year four suspected criminals under lock and key bolted without breaking cell doors at Chintheche Police Station in Nkhata Bay and stole a sub-machine gun with 20 rounds of ammunition. They are still at large.
Last October robbers also raided Soche police substation in Blantyre and broke into the CID office where they went away with assorted exhibits before breaking into the nearby Soche Magistrate’s court and stole several other exhibits.
