Pitcher emerges victor |

Blantyre-based experienced tennis player Ron Pitcher beat John Melrose 6-3, 6-3 to win the 2003 MacSteel Veterans Malawi Open Championship played on Saturday and Sunday at Blantyre Sports Club.
Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) head coach Thompson Mtengula, who organised the tournament for the sponsors, said the event attracted 40 players from Blantyre, Lilongwe and Zomba.
“The men’s singles and doubles were played on a knockout format while the mixed doubles, women’s singles, doubles which were divided into group A and B were played in a round robin league,” said Mtengula.
Mtengula said Pitcher beat Steven Changa of Zomba 6-2, while Melrose knocked out Grey Mang’anda of Blantyre 6-5 in the semi finals.
In the women’s singles Maggie O’ Toole outclassed Kerry Halliwell 6-4, 6-1 in the final after the two had emerged winners of group A and B respectively.
Pitcher and Phil Sturgess beat Melrose and Steve Graham 6-3, 6-4 in the finals of the men’s doubles while in the final of ladies doubles Joan Williams and Halliwell defeated O’Toole and Maggie Mkandawire 36-30 points.
In the mixed doubles Pitcher and Kerry Staples beat Sam Connor and O’Toole 33-28 points.
Managing director of MacSteel Peter Ellis said he was impressed by good organisation of the tournament which was very competitive and pledged to continue sponsoring the event.
“Every body was happy with the way the tournament was run and I would like to thank Mtengula for organising the competition so well. We will sponsor the tournament again next year,” said Ellis.
