Demat for better management
by McCarthy Mwalwimba, 12 June 2003 - 18:00:25
The Development of Malawian Traders Trust (Demat) has said its efforts in ensuring sustainable poultry production is being suppressed by lack of managerial skills in the leaders of farmers cooperatives and over reliance on donor aid.
Demat’s assistant general manager Judith Chirwa said this on Wednesday when she opened a strategic management training workshop for executive members of Shire Highlands Poultry Farmers Cooperatives (Shipfcos). She said for Malawi to move ahead with its development efforts there is need for better managed institutions.
Chirwa said there were some divisions in the corporative arising from misunderstandings on the roles of the various parties in the cooperatives hence the need to train the leaders on good managerial skills.
“Some groups believe that Demat should assist in the delivery of all the needed inputs such as birds or feeds while they are waiting for there sales,” she said adding that farmers should realise that donors will not be there forever.
Chirwa also bemoaned poor responses from the farmers in paying back loans due to the Shipfcos not being given the mandate to play a greater role.
She urged farmers to put much effort in the training so that they acquire skills that would enable them realise their goals. The training was jointly funded by Oxfarm and Demat. It is aimed at curbing the shortage of poultry products in the country.
