A presidential convoy travelling from Limbe towards Blantyre on the wrong lane of the Masauko Chipembere Highway on Wednesday got involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming private car being driven by an unsuspecting driver near the Independence Arch at Chichiri.
The car on the convoy, a White Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number MP 1606 had its front tyres, wind-screen and bonnet quashed as was the private car, a Ford Telstar registration number BK 9240.
An eye witness, Mathews Phiri, who was standing close to the accident scene just before noon said he heard a siren and was surprised to see State House vehicles driving towards Blantyre using the lane that is used by cars going towards Limbe.
“My friend and I were asking one another as to what was going and before we talked further we saw the car that was in front of the convoy hitting an oncoming car being driven by a white man,” said Phiri.
He said the man was trapped in the vehicle for some time and it took police officers from two other black land-rover vehicles that were on the convoy to remove him.
The accident caused a traffic jam on the highway for close to an hour and when reporters visited the scene they found an ambulance just leaving the scene and traffic police and road traffic officers were overhead blaming the accident on the convoy.
However, major hospitals in Blantyre namely Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre Adventist Hospital and Mwayiwathu Private Hospital refused to say if the victims of the accident were treated at the hospitals. |
