Old Mutual donated K50,000 and 70 caps to the Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) on Tuesday in support of the association’s preparations for the national field and track event to take place on June 14 at Kamuzu Institute for Youth in Lilongwe.
Managing director of Old Mutual Jean du Plessis said this is the first time Old Mutual has made a donation to sports as their social responsibility was mainly focused on health and education.
“This time we thought of supporting athletics because it plays a role in education. We have the pleasure to make a donation to Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) for the national track and field event because we feel education is not complete without sports,” said du Plessis.
Du Plessis said though the donation was like a drop in an ocean to cover AAM’s full budget he expected the contribution will help in the exposure of athletes who could represent Malawi at international competitions.
Taking his turn AAM president Dunstain Mwaungulu thanked Old Mutual for the donation which he said was a substantial amount.
“Without this donation AAM would not have experienced this kind of exposure with these journalists around. We hope that sports will brought into the corporate business where resources can be available to promote athletics for entertainment or leisure,” said Mwaungulu.
Mwaungulu said athletics is unlike football where there is demand for big sponsorship.
“Athletics is not like football where you do not put in a lot of money. Our annual budget is K3 million and for the national event we have approached different companies for support of events at any level, district or regional,” he said.
The AAM president said the only way of projecting ideals of the association is giving opportunity to athletes who come from remote areas to give out their best and represent Malawi in major events.
