Malawi’s only Boeing 737-300 plane, the Kwacha, Tuesday evening developed a fault as one of its doors could not close when it was about to take off from South Africa to Malawi.
Sources said yesterday that one of the doors failed to close after all passengers had already taken their seats.
He said the passengers were accommodated in Johannesburg before Air Malawi leased another plane to take them home yesterday afternoon.
Air Malawi Commercial Director Beatrice Malenga confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.
“The passengers are on their way here, we have managed to take care of the situation,” she said.
Malenga could not be drawn to discuss the extent of the fault and when the plane would resume flights.
“The plane is on the ground now and about the extent of the fault, we have to wait for a full report on that,” she said.
Malenga said they have leased another plane to service other routes that the Kwacha operates.
“We do that every time, even when the head of state takes the Kwacha, we lease another plane,” she said.
