Hip-hop fans in the country should brace themselves for bigger times soon with major hip-hop acts The Real Elements and Wisdom Chitedze preparing their third and second albums, respectively.
Wisdom confided in that he has finished work on his second album Misozi. The star of the hit song Tipewe said last week work on the 12-track album is over but he is waiting for his promoter who is “currently tied up with other things.”
Recorded at Radical Studios in Area 10, Lilongwe, where he did his debut album Speechless, Wisdom said Misozi contains a remix of Tipewe and Odala Mayi which were previously released as singles.
Wisdom explained that the remix, Tipewe (The Story Continues), contains the same beat but different lyrics. He said Wadya Wani is a hip-hop piece whilst Misozi fuses hip-hop and reggae.
Wisdom explained that unlike in Speechless, where he worked with a number of leading artists, there are no collaborations in Misozi.
“I was working on the album at night after knocking off from work so it was difficult to work with anybody,” he explained, adding he worked on the instrumentation on his own.
Despite the apparent hip-hop and R&B; elements in his songs, Wisdom says he is neither a hip-hip or R&B; artist, preferring to call himself fusionist.
Wisdom, who contends that Misozi is a better attempt as compared to Tipewe, said the themes in Misozi range from spiritual to social.
On the same hip-hop vein, Stix of the UK-based Malawian rap outfit The Real Elements disclosed that the group has finished work on their new album, a follow-up to their hugely successful I Came and African Star albums.
Stix also disclosed that the group has had successful concerts in the UK and performed at the UK Hip-Hop Awards last year with major UK artists where rap hotshot Ja Rule and other US rap stars were nominated for awards.
Stix also said The Real Elements songs from African Star have been released in Kenya where they group has received a lot of airplay in Nairobi.
“We also went there [Kenya] for a tour last year,” said Stix adding that Botswana has also tasted their music. “We plan on breaking through to the American market this year after completing our new album.”
“Our music has made a breakthrough in different places. We’ve been blessed,” he said. |
