The Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) in cooperation with the Lilongwe City Assembly has embarked on a clean up campaign of expired goods following a major operation recently that exposed dirty dealings by some traders in the city.
Cama public relations manager Tom Mtenje said on Tuesday the association has plans to carry out further inspections around Lilongwe City to ensure that the consumers are not exposed to any unnecessary risks to their health.
“In the month of April, the association plans to carry out further inspections, because last week when we conducted an inspection we discovered that goods in some outlets were expired, condemned and confiscated by the City Assembly”. Mtenje said.
Last Thursday Cama, accompanied by Lilongwe City Assembly officials, went on a raid around the city’s commercial area and netted goods worth over K40,000 at one outlet in Bwalo La Njobvu, he said.
He added that the team also discovered that some retailers were deliberately deleting expiry dates on foodstuffs.
“My advice to the consumer is that, check for the expiry date on the foodstuffs and if it is not there, do not buy it because most probably it is expired. Be especially wary of goods on special offer,” said Mtenje.
Mtenje urged the public to report unscrupulous traders to either Cama or the City Environmental Health Office. He said most traders are putting profit before public safety and health.
“So far the inspection is producing the expected results, so we will continue carrying out these inspections,” he said.
