Digital radio project launched
by McDonald Chapalapata, 02 April 2003
Deputy Minister for Local Government Henry Midiani on Monday launched the municipal pilot digital radio programme, which will see city and town assemblies linking each other through a digital radio.
Director for Staff Development Institute Blessings Chilabade said apart from transmitting quality sound, the assemblies would be able to receive data through the radio, which can be down-loaded on a computer.
The institute is coordinating the programme together with the Malawi Association for Local Government (Malga)
“World Space Foundation will be broadcasting programmes featuring interviews with people on how they expect their assemblies to help them or indeed problems that assemblies are facing and how other countries in the Sadc region have solved those particular problems,” said Chilabade.
He said the pilot programme is targeting 12 town and city assemblies in the Central Region.
In his speech, Midiani said the programme mainly aims at reaching rural local assemblies which have no immediate access to training programmes.
“Government highly appreciates the initiatives in this programme which will enhance capacity and dialogue between citizens and service providers,” said Midiani.
He thanked the World Space Foundation for the technology and the World Bank Institute for sponsoring the programme.
