The MCP management committee has agreed that its national executive committee (NEC) should meet to look at the party’s constitution to enable president Gwanda Chakuamba to run for a third term of office during the convention.
Secretary general Kate Kainja said in a statement on Tuesday although their constitution allows a party president to hold office for two terms, the interpretation of the constitution as regards Chakuamba’s eligibility for another run at the top seat has been referred to the NEC.
She said the NEC, empowered by section 66 of the party’s constitution, will meet next week to look at interpretation of section 30 (2) and 36 that limit the president to serve two terms only.
Treasurer general Hetherwick Ntaba, who has declared interest to contest the party’s presidency, said in an interview later that Chakuamba cannot stand for the third term of office because he has already completed his two terms.
Kainja said the matter was discussed at the party’s management committee last week where all members differed with Ntaba on the interpretation of the two sections and referred the matter to NEC.
Ntaba confirmed he attended the meeting, saying he stood by his interpretation of the constitution that Chakuamba is not supposed to run during the convention.
