BOC Gases has said its multipurpose gas product, Handipack, is a better alternative and possible answer to the persistent power failures that the country is facing since it can be used for both lighting and cooking, a company official said on Tuesday.
Handigas Product Manager McDonald Bregger said in an interview that people should not be heavily inconvenienced with the power failures, as their product would help the situation.
“The Handipack is very handy and one can use it for cooking and after that one can fit a lamp for lighting. It’s convenient and smart,” said Bregger.
He said the cylinder is refundable at a price of K2,700 and it can hold 6 kilogrammes of gas and can be refillable in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Mangochi.
“But we are making arrangements that people can be refilling the gas in some service stations across the country for their convenience,” said Bregger.
Bregger said the use of Handipack is environment-friendly and is contributing to afforestation in the country.
“We are working hand in hand with government in promoting afforestation because if people use gas, no one would have a reason of cutting down trees for charcoal,” he said.
He also said people should not fear to use gas which is considered to be dangerous in some quarters.
“We explain to our customers precautionary measures on the use of gas,” added Bregger.
Many parts in the country are experiencing persistent power failures because of the breakdown at Nkula B power generation plant.
