Journalists in the country will on April 28 hold their own parliamentary session at Parliament Building in Lilongwe to discuss media freedom and democracy issues.
National Media Institute of Southern Africa (Namisa) spokesman Innocent Chitosi said in an interview Speaker of Parliament Sam Mpasu has already given Namisa permission to go ahead with the meeting in parliament premises.
Chitosi said the parliament session will be part of the activities lined up for the commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day on May 3.
“All important issues pertaining to media freedom will be discussed by journalists at this parliamentary meeting. All the deliberations will be conducted as a real parliament and the bills that will be passed will be used to govern the media in the country,” said Chitosi.
He said before the parliamentary sitting, there will be public debates in all the three cities of the country where the public will review the conduct of journalists and where the media workers will also talk about their work.
Chitosi, who is also chairing the task force on the World Press Freedom Day celebrations, said on the morning of May 3 the journalists will march from Chichiri Stadium to Blantyre Sports Club and in the evening outstanding journalists will receive awards from Namisa.
He also said the Media Council will launch an accreditation system for journalists during the award presentation ceremony.
“This year’s celebration of World Press Freedom Day will be the best. Our budget for the celebration is coming up to K1.3 million. We’ve already received the money from our cooperating partners,” said Chitosi.
