Chalira dismissed
by Gedion Munthali, 18 March 2003
Government has terminated services of Economic Planning and Development Director General Zak Chalira with immediate effect.
Chalira confirmed in an interview on Monday he was relieved of his duties last week after being recalled from Sudan where a one-day summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) was held on Monday.
“I confirm that my services have been terminated with immediate effect,” said Chalira. “I am right now out of job.”
He said that last Wednesday he left the country for Sudan but was recalled on the same day.
“When I arrived back I got communication informing me that my services had been terminated,” said Chalira.
He could not explain the reasons he had been relieved of his duties, saying the Deputy Secretary to the President and Cabinet would be in a position to know.
“Speak to Mr Kamphambe Nkhoma about the reasons,” said Chalira, who replaced the late Mapopa Chipeta at the National Economic Council before the body reverted to a Department of Economic Planning and Development a couple of weeks ago.
When contacted, Nkhoma declined to give his comment.
“Sorry, I do not have anything to say,” said Nkhoma.
President Muluzi appointed former Deputy Reserve Bank Governor Bingu wa Mutharika as Minister of Economic Planning and Development, a move that essentially elevated the department to a ministry.
