MTL Wanderers striker Mike Maganga died in a car accident on Tuesday afternoon while team-mate Maxwell Chirwa suffered serious internal injuries.
Wanderers general secretary Aubrey Monjeza said the accident happened at Lake View in Ntcheu as the two players were driving to Lilongwe on a private visit in the company of an unidentified lady when the Opel saloon car they were travelling in burst a tyre and overturned into a gourge.
“The entire Wanderers family is in a state of deep shock following the death of one of its great sons,” reads part of a press release from the nomads signed by club chairman Humphrey Mvula.
Maganga, son to celebrated former national soccer team goal tender Boniface, died on the way to Dedza Hospital.
Monjeza said burial of the late combative winger, who once played for the Under-20 national soccer team, will take place Thursday afternoon at Misesa Cemetery in Limbe.
Maganga, who has died at the age off 22, rose to become one of the brightest football prospects in the late 90s when he became top scorer of the Blantyre and Districts Football League (BDFL) Premier Division whilst playing for Wanderers Youth.
He caught the eye of the then national coach Jack Chamangwana, who called him for trials with the senior national team in 1999 and was immediately promoted.
Chirwa is currently admitted at Lilongwe Central Hospital (LCH) and Monjeza described his condition as stable.
In related developments, former Wanderers long time defender Frank ‘Lunzu 6’ Kamoyo and former Illovo and national soccer team left back Moses Meya also died recently after long illnesses.
