Eye hunters go for dead bodies
by Pilirani Semu-Banda, 11 March 2003
People suspected to be on a mission to remove people’s eyes have hit Mwambo’s area in Zomba where they are exhuming people’s bodies to gorge out their eyes.
A source from the area, who did not want to be named, said the hunters have so far done it on two dead bodies.
“They are targeting newly buried bodies and have so far managed to remove eyes from two dead bodies but on one they failed to complete the mission and only removed an eyelid,” said the source.
He said it looked like the hunters were disturbed while carrying out their mission.
But police spokesman George Chikowi said the police only have one report where a body was exhumed and that one eyelid was missing when the police and medical officials went to the graveyard.
Chikowi said Evans Nazombe’s body was found lying around a graveyard on March 8, four days after it was buried.
“People who had gone to dig a grave for another person found Nazombe’s body lying around and upon inspection they found the right eyelid missing,” said Chikowi.
He said the police have intensified investigations into the matter and deployed officers to patrol the area.
In another development, police in Liwonde are questioning a 14-year-old boy on suspicion that he knows something about a girl, aged 7, who was murdered and had her private parts removed.
Sources in Liwonde said the girl was abducted on her way from school and taken into the bush where she was murdered.
Liwonde police officer-in-charge Mtuwa said the police “are still investigating the matter to establish the real circumstances surrounding the death of the girl”.
“I can’t tell you much at the moment because we’re yet to establish what exactly happened,” said Mtuwa.
The sources in Liwonde said some people in the area have stopped their children from going to school while others are accompanying their children to and from school for fear of the murderers.
