Four new faces, including High Court and Supreme Court Registrar Healey Potani and Malawi’s High Commissioner to Zimbabwe Tujilane Chizumila, have been appointed to the High Court benches as judges.
The Judicial Service Commission said in a statement monitored on MBC radio on Monday that President Bakili Muluzi approved the appointment of the four who also include former Malawi Law Society President John Katsala and former chief resident magistrate Esmie Chombo.
The statement said the four, two females and two males, will fill vacancies left in the High Court by judges Isaac Mtambo and Atanazio Tembo, who were promoted to the Supreme Court of Appeal on February 14, 2003 and judges William Hanjahanja and Maxon Mkandawire who are retiring in April.
The appointment of Chizumila and Chombo brings to four the number of female judges in the Malawi judiciary. The others are Supreme Court Judge Anastasia Msosa, who was the first woman to be appointed to the High Court and High Court Judge Jane Ansah.
Potani said Chombo once served as a magistrate and rose to the position of chief resident magistrate before going on unpaid leave to join Press Agriculture from where she has been recruited.
