35 cops under investigation

Inspector General (IG) of Police Joseph Aironi on Tuesday shifted 35 traffic officers to general duties following reports that they have bought cars on a cash basis.
Police spokesman George Chikowi said in an interview the traffic officers are also being investigated to find out where they got the money to buy the cars.
“This move has been made following complaints from people all over the country that most traffic officers are corrupt,” said Chikowi.
He said the police officers in question bought the vehicles without even getting loans from government.
Chikowi said the issue is being treated as serious since the incomes of the police officers are not enough for them to buy vehicles on cash basis.
“I think most of them will even be taken to court. Meanwhile, they have been reallocated to general duties,” said Chikowi.
One of the traffic officers who has been reallocated but refused to be named said the decision is not fair because “there are a lot of honest ways which people use to get money other than corruption”.
He said some of the officers have worked for a long time and they have been saving money.
“We’re being victimised. In fact some of the officers have been transferred to remote areas because they have bought cellular phones. Our bosses don’t want us to prosper,” said the officers.
“Some of our big bosses have amassed property within a very short time and they are left scot free. It’s surprising that they don’t want us to prosper,” said the officer.
Last year the IG reallocated other traffic officers to general duties following complaints that the officers are receiving bribes.
