In a break from the usual Dinner and Dance, the Theatre Association of Malawi has said it will early March host a Dinner and Theatre at the Le Meridian Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
Theatre Association president Gertrude Kamkwatira told Society that the idea has been hatched as an attempt by her association to contribute towards nation-building by assisting victims of the recent floods.
“We want to make it different. People are used to dinner and dance but for the first time we are hosting this dinner and theatre but for a good cause because the proceeds will go to the flood victims via the commissioner for relief and rehabilitation,” she said.
“They [the flood victims] are our fellow Malawians but what happens is that when something like this happens, people tend live everything to government but as fellow citizens who are talented, we feel we can use our talent to assist our fellow Malawians for free,” she explained, and added:
“We are trying to do a service, to contribute a little to the nation.”
Kamkwatira disclosed that some of the major drama groups are going to strut their stuff during what she promises to be “a long fun-filled night”.
“Some of the theatre groups that are going to be there are Wakhumbata, Kwathu, Alabama, Upile, Chancellor College Ensemble and the National Dance Group,” she said.
She explained that the criteria for choosing the theatre groups was tricky but they eventually picked those that are seen to be “crowd pullers” but have also paid their contribution fees.
Kamkwatira said the association’s target figure is half a million.
