Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) radio broadcaster Maganizo Mazeze was rearrested Wednesday afternoon and charged for the second time with publishing false news likely to cause fear and alarm to the public.
He was granted bail late in the afternoon on a bail condition of K5,000 non cash.
Mazeze was first arrested last Sunday morning following his refusal to reveal details of an interview he aired recently of an alleged blood sucking victim.
But Chief Resident Magistrate Sylvester Kalembera ordered the police to release him on Monday and accused the cops of arresting the journalist illegally without a warrant of arrest.
Mazeze said in an interview soon after his bail on Wednesday that the police obtained a warrant of arrest on Tuesday but only arrested him the following day.
“My lawyer has been working the whole day to get me out on bail and managed to get me out just this afternoon,” said Mazeze.
He said he will appear before court on Friday morning.
Police spokesman George Chikowi refused to comment on the arrest saying he did not know anything.
“That’s news to me. I have to find out what’s happening before I comment,” said Chikowi.
Surprisingly there have been no arrests at Television Malawi where alleged victims also gave their accounts on Tuesday evening.
