You might not have heard of Hansley Wiseman Mkumba or if you have, you might be wondering if he is still alive.
Mkumba is a has-been-musician who became a preacher, now resident in Botswana.
He has just released a gospel album The Lord Ambuye which was recorded at Will K Banda’s Sparrow Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Mkumba, a dean of student affairs at Life Ministry Training Centre in Gaborone where he has been resident for the past five years, said in an interview that he played music with New Arrival, Nyatwa Sounds, Police Strings, Strutters, Hansely and the Winners before joining late Brite Nkhata’s Makasu Band.
“From there I trekked to Zimbabwe where I played with Harare Drive at Meikles Hotel and then I joined Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited in 1998,” he said.
It was around that time, Mkumba recalled, that he gave his life to the Lord after a revelation one morning.
“I was sleeping one morning when God spoke to me and told me to stop the life I was living, saying: ‘Come to me and have peace’,” Mkumba revealed.
It was then that he decided to apply for a Bible course at Life Ministry Training Centre where he graduated two years ago and was employed as dean of student affairs soon after.
According to Mkumba, The Lord Ambuye is already on the market in Botswana and South Africa.
He recently came into the country to arrange for the album’s marketing and distribution.
“I have also managed to get contracts in Zimbabwe but I thought it wise to come to my home country first,” he said, elaborating that his music is a compilation of African jazz, calypso and reggae genres.
“The Lord Ambuye to me is worship because of what the Lord has done for me personally in my life: He feeds me, clothes me and he heals me,” he proclaimed.
