Current Super League whipping boys Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC, have gone hunting for a new tactician in a bid to restore their glory and image, after constantly being on the receiving end cricket scores in the league.
But team manager Lameck Khonje, whilst confirming the club had advertised for a part time coach, said he is still convinced the team can turn the tables and surprise those who regard it as the league whipping boys.
“In all honesty, our team is playing very well, the only setback is that the players lack experience to thoroughly check the other more experienced Super League teams,” said Khonje, parrying allegations that the recent caretaker coach Peterkins Kayira contributed to the heavy losses.
Said Khonje: “We cannot blame Kayira, he is a good coach and he came in when we were desperate for assistance. Let me set the record straight. Kayira was not on our payroll, we just asked him to assist in his capacity as chair of Coaches Association of Malawi.”
The constant bombardment of the Mzuni boys in the League forced the club’s supporters and officials to chop their first Super League coach Alex Ngwira. But the sacking did not pay any dividends as the team continued letting in goals in every game.
“Let me stress here that we are not barring anyone from applying, even Ngwira can apply for the advertised post of coach, provided he proves to be capable of delivering,” said Khonje in an interview.
Khonje said he was confident that the club would recruit a good coach this time around as it was working hand in hand with the Coaches Association of Malawi to hunt for a good coach.
However, according to him, the sponsors, Mzuzu University, prefer to recruit a part-time coach since the institution structure does not provide for an established coach.
