National Democratic Alliance (NDA) said on Friday that it will hold government responsible if the pressure group’s convention slated for 2nd to 5th January is disrupted.
Chair of NDA International Affairs Committee Viva Nyimba told a press briefing in Blantyre that the pressure group expects government to protect it when it holds its convention at Chichiri Conference Hall.
“We’re taxpayers and government is there to protect us just like everybody else,” said Nyimba.
NDA National Organising Secretary Peter Chupa said at the briefing delegates to the convention will endorse the registration of NDA as a political party and hold elections.
He said all positions, including that of party president, are open for contest.
“Honourable Mpinganjira has expressed interest to stand as party president but the position is still open for contest,” said Chupa.
He said the elections will be by secret ballot.
Chair of the convention planning committee Mary Clara Makungwa said 1,000 delegates from all over the country including Likoma and Chizumulu will attend the convention.
She said NDA has invited to the opening ceremony, international dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, NGOs, trade unions and party members including those from UDF.
“After the opening ceremony, we will have private business until Sunday when we will hold a mass rally where we expect to address people on our new status,” said Makungwa.
Other positions to be contested for are that of vice president, second vice president, secretary general, treasurer general, campaign secretary, elections secretary, secretary for people with disabilities.
