Beach Chamber, a premier resort in Karonga, plans to implement special guided trails for its holiday making clientele to sample historical sites in the district.
Managing Director Peter Manda said in an interview the chamber decided to add the service to the resort’s guests as a way of assisting tourism in the country.
“Karonga is full of history, just around this place is a site where over 1,000 people were killed at once by Mlozi’s Ruga Ruga terrorists, in what is known as the Kambwe massacre. We feel tourists coming here should enjoy visiting these sites in addition to the lake breeze synonymous with this joint,” said Manda.
He said the building of Beach Chamber by its initial proprietor, the late Helmuth Hailling, brother in-law to Manda, was in compliance to the owner’s love for the Malawi-German connection, through the two country’s historical connection in Karonga.
Hailling, who in 1992 established the lodge with his wife late Cleopatra (Manda), was a German national and had located the Beach Chamber at Kambwe because Karonga had a lot of German history facets, like world war battles.
“Meanwhile, we have already ordered some TV sets to put in all our 15 rooms, as opposed to just the superior rooms as the present case. We are doing this to beef up our quest of enticing international guests. It would be better that they relax and enjoy such facilities after viewing the historical sites,” said Manda.
Situated five kilometres from Karonga on the Tanzanian border, Beach Chamber’s biggest clientele are tourists in overland trucks (mostly from Europe and German in particular) and Malawian chance guests, especially conference makers.
