BOC Gases Limited has launched Handigas, a household cooking, heating and lighting gas, to offer a cheaper alternative to charcoal users in the country, the company’s official said on Tuesday.
BOC Gases Sales Manager Penjani Mkambula said in an interview in Lilongwe that the launch of Handigas will also help to curb the alarming rate of deforestation the country is facing.
“The timing of introducing the product coincides with the rainy season which is associated with a number of energy problems, including power failures. Consumers will now have an alternative source of energy,” he said.
Mkambula said the Handigas is a six-kilogramme cylinder complete with a cooker top which can also be used to fit braai stands, gooseneck heaters and lamps.
He said the Handigas cylinders, under the brand name Handipak, are available at a refundable deposit of K2,500 together with six kilogrammes of Handigas and it is refillable at “very competitive prices”.
“If consumers feel that they no longer need the Handipak, they can return it and they will get their deposit back,” said Mkambula.
He said the cylinders are offered at below the landed cost in order to promote the culture of using gas in the country.
Mkambula said there is a misconception among certain quarters of the community that gas is dangerous to use.
“All customers who purchase the Handipaks are trained on the safe usage and handling of the gas equipment in order to address these concerns. We also provide backup service for all the appliances that we sell,” he said.
He said the Handigas has proved to be a big success in Kenya and South Africa.
“It is our hope that all stakeholders, including non-governmental organisations involved in programmes on environmental preservation will support this initiative which will go a long way towards reducing the wanton cutting down of trees,” said Mkambula.
BOC Gases has been operational in the country since 1969 and is a subsidiary of the global BOC Group that has representation in over 50 countries in the world.
