Soldier Lucius Banda has cut his second CD that includes two new versions of his popular 2001 hit lovesong Tina and a tribute to the late local reggae star Evison Matafale who died in police custody on November 27, 2001.
Banda, in an interview on Monday, said the four-track CD titled Tina which will hit the market tomorrow also contains a Christmas song Wabadwa.
The new Tina versions have come in kwaito (d-gong) and guitar versions.
Banda said he came up with the new versions of Tina to satisfy his fans who asked him for “faster and different versions” of the song besides the original version which fuses reggae and local traditional dances like Beni.
“Everywhere I performed people asked me for another version of Tina and I realised that indeed the song can be played in different styles like jazz but I have given my fans the kwaito and guitar versions which they will sure like,” said Banda.
On the other hand, Banda said release of the music video for his Zembani Band has been delayed to late January 2002 because of his CD project.
Banda’s Tribute to Matafale comes amid accusations by Rastafarians that he was a personal enemy to the late local reggae star. The Rastas made the allegations after Banda was included in President Bakili Muluzi’s six-member commission of inquiry into Matafale’s death.
But Banda said he composed the Tribute to Matafale a day after his death and before people started talking as a way of honouring a deceased colleague.
Banda has since brushed aside accusations that he was a sworn enemy of Matafale saying he only had “a professional [not personal] argument” with Matafale at a meeting and thereafter they shook hands and exchanged telephone numbers.
Banda’s Tina CD comes after his other successful CD project The Collection released during his band’s tour of the UK in 1999. |
