Blantyre City Mayor John Chikakwiya last week hailed H & P Steel Wire for donating 150 bags of maize to some wards in the city which have been hit by a severe food shortage.
Chikakwiya said the steel company was responding to his appeal for food assistance in August.
“I visited the wards in August to find out what problems the people were facing. But chiefs and councillors indicated that people were facing acute food shortage,” said Chikakwi-ya.
He said the city assembly, being cash strapped, could not come to the rescue of the residents in the wards.
“That is why I approached H & P Steel and other companies. I know some of the companies that have not yet responded to our appeal will do favourably in due course,” said city chief.
The maize will be distributed in Nancholi, Mapanga and Namalimwe wards. Each of the wards is to get 50 bags to be distributed among the most affected families.
Other wards most affected in the city include Nkolokoti, Bangwe, Nzedi and Chigumula, Chikakwiya added.
