Barely a week after grabbing the Carlsberg Darts Regional Trophy, Lilongwe-based darts giants MA Motors were at it again over the weekend, winning the K100,000 Royale Chemicals Darts Trophy during the national finals held at Portuguese Club in the capital.
Seven teams, namely Kaka Motel, Kaning’ina, Agason, Gola, Hazards, Royal Oak and MA Motors reached the national finals, which darted off Saturday closing on Sunday.
It was all plain sailing for MA Motors, who easily trounced all their opponents, to become the first team to win all games at the national finals. They beat Royal Oak 9-3, Hazards 10-2, Agason 10-2, Kaning’ina 9-3, Gola 11-1 and Kaka 10-2 to collect a maximum 18 points.
Mzuzu-based Kaka Motel finished second with 11 points from three wins, two draws and a loss while Blantyre-based Gola finished third. Lilongwe sides Hazards and Royal Oak shared the fourth and fifth positions respectively with Agason from Blantyre on sixth. On seventh position were Kaning’ina, the other candidates from Mzuzu.
For winning the trophy, MA Motors got the Trophy, K20,000 plus gold medals while runners-up Kaka received K15,000 and silver medals. Gola pocketed K12,000, Hazards K9,000, Royal Oak K8,000, Agason K6,000 and Kaning’ina K5,000.
MA’s Captain Morgan Jiya came out player of the tournament and received K5,000.
A total of 1,540 tons were scored with MA Motors hitting the highest number of 366 tons. There were ten 180s of which three came from Gola’s Soka Banda and two each from Davis Castledine of MA and Ignacious Jana.
Presenting the prizes, sponsor Majid Panjwani congratulated MA Motors for retaining the trophy he introduced in 1994. He also hailed the Lilongwe and Districts Darts League (LDDL) for assisting Dam in organising the finals.
Dam president Perks Ligoya thanked the sponsor for increasing the stakes from K62,500 to K100,000.
“With this sponsorship, Royale Chemicals stands as one of the most prestigious darts tournaments in the country,” said Ligoya.
