Malawi will next month host an international workshop on marketing and exporting of food products for southern and central Africa.
Workshop coordinator Alfred Osunsanya said in an interview the meeting will mainly focus on means to improve and strengthen the link between small and medium enterprises (SMEs) trade partners and large processors.
Fair Trade Assistance of the Netherlands and Hivos, an NGO for development cooperation based in Harare, Zimbabwe, will conduct the workshop in conjunction with officials of the Zambia-Malawi-Mozambique Growth Triangle (ZMM-GT) and Business Consult Africa (BCA).
“The workshop is useful to starters and growers on the export market,” said Osunsanya, who is also general secretary for ZMM-GT’s Malawi Private Sector Forum.
He said participants in the workshop will be appraised on critical success factors in business planning, marketing and exporting, different aspects of quality management and trends in food markets.
Osunsanya said participants will also network with different food chain stakeholders and explore joint projects within the ZMM-GT area.
He said other advantages are that participants will be able to link up with Fair Trade Assistance for markets in Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and other selected areas in Europe.
Technical trade barriers hinder the process of export capability of commodities and processed food products into the European and American markets, Osunsanya said in his study report.
The report said lack of information and knowledge about the consumer preferences and quality required in those countries also compounded the problem.
It said another major area of concern has been the emphasis by the industry to produce for local consumption. |
