Don’t cripple Tum’s affairs

The non-remittance of over K3 million in Teachers’ Union of Malawi’s (Tum) membership fees by the Ministry of Education’s five of the six divisions in the country will adversely affect the operations of the union meant to articulate the aspirations of the men and women of the chalk.
Tum is the only voice for teachers in the country and it is doubtful if this voice can be heard very far if the union is held to ransom by the divisions because they are not willing to give what is due to it for whatever reason.
Judging from teachers’ cries in the past, teaching is not the best paying of professions in the country and it can be argued that teachers are paying the membership fees through the nose. Nothing can be more painful than to learn that the deductions are not remitted to Tum.
On the other hand, we would like to advise Tum that it should look at this problem as a challenge and eye-opener. Depending solely on teachers’ subscriptions to carry out its activities is putting all eggs in one basket. And as can be seen from the saga, it is folly because the arrangement depends on the goodwill of the same ministry the union sometimes locks horns with.
Tum should, therefore, explore other avenues of generating revenue to fund its operations. Failing to do this will mean more such wrangles with the Ministry of Education, which do little to improve the standards of education which everybody is clamouring for. |
