Reports on crime, particularly armed robbery and car jacking, clearly show that the perpetrators are determined to terrorise the community and that the situation is getting out of hand.
Just recently, they stole two vehicles belonging to embassies, among other vehicles.
What is even more worrying is that these criminals are not just after the loot; they wound and disable permanently as was the case with the Malawi Against Physical Disabilities (MAP) driver in Mangochi recently, or kill as was the case with Nation Publications Ltd head driver in Lilongwe Monday.
We do appreciate the efforts the police are making to curb the crime and congratulate them for not just recovering some vehicles but also arresting some suspects as was the case over the weekend.
We are aware that police have even networked with neighbouring countries to deal with car jacking.
But the rate at which this crime is soaring is alarming. It is also effectively pushing back the country’s economy.
It is all clear that something has to be done, and done urgently to prevent chaos otherwise these ‘terrorists’ will wreak more havoc and deprive the nation of people who should have contributed productively to development.
