South African Football Association (Safa) president Molefi Oliphant last Friday apologised to Fam president John Zingale and two other national association heads from Namibia and Zambia for an article that appeared in a leading South African newspaper, Sunday Times, in June quoting him as having confirmed that the three received bribes from Caf president Issa Hayatou to vote for him during Fifa presidential election.
Oliphant apologised during a Cosafa executive meeting held on Friday and went on to write a letter of apology the same day.
“After having thoroughly investigated the above article, I am regretfully unable to trace any source as to where and how this article materialised.
“On behalf of the association and myself, I would like to personally apologise to you and members of your association for any embarrassment or inconvenience that this article may have caused,” read part of Oliphant’s letter.
The said article alleged that Zingale, Namibian Football Association head Petrus Damaseb and Zambia’s Evaristo Kasunga were offered US $5,000 each as a bribe to vote for Hayatou.
Asked whether he would take the matter further, Zingale simply said:
“The article caused great embarrassment to me personally but we’ll see what comes up.” |
