Tigresses 45
Queens 36
The entertainment was compelling and the dra-ma was ceaseless as a five-star Admarc Tigresses revived memories of their good old days to stun bitter rivals MTL Queens 45-36 scintillating Chombe Tea Netball Trophy finals played at the former’s Sedi Netball Court on Sunday.
The turn-out was simply amazing, so was the atmosphere as a vastly superior Tigresses side gave the Queens a run-around to become the proud first winners of the K300,000 showcase—the richest netball trophy in the country.
Tigresses gangling goal shooter Linda Magombo, ranked as one of the best shooters on the local scene if not in the region, was at her usual best netting basket after basket.
The Queens’ defender Esther Nkhoma, who was tasked with the burden of marking Magombo, had an awful afternoon in trying to contain the tall and ruthless finisher.
Veteran Peace Chawinga and exciting Anne Mopiha were also a marvel to watch as they threw the Queens this way and that, while Caroline Mtukule stood firm at the back.
But it was not completely a one way affair. Queens’ centre Emily Nyanga also tantalised Tigresses with her pace, tricks and skills. No wonder she was named the best centre and took home a cool K2,000.
Kelita Hau also proved to be a handful to the ‘Tiga’ rearguard, but she was later shut-out by Mtukule who also pocketed K2,000 as best defender.
Tigresses led 15-9 in the first quarter and went on to lead 28-19 at half time.
However, the Queens stepped on the gas in the third quarter in which Tigresses were made to look naive by the former’s slick movement and netted 11 baskets against only seven to create a difference of only five goals (35-30).
But inspired by Magombo, who was named the best shooter and went away with K2,000, Tigresses reorganised themselves and pumped in 11 baskets against five to seal the game at 46-35.
Tigresses went away with K100,000, the glittering golden trophy, medals plus packs of Chombe Tea while the Queens got K60,000, medals and Chombe Tea packs for finishing as runners-up.
Third placed Civonets who beat Blue Bird from Mzuzu 56-31, got K30,000 and Chombe Tea packs while Blue Bird who finished fourth, got K20,000 plus Chombe Tea packs.
The Northern Region-based outfit also pocketed K5,000 for being the most disciplined team. Griffin ‘Zagallo’ Saenda was named the best umpire and he pocketed K2,500.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony Tambala Food Products’ Human and Administration Manager Monica Kanthambi said her company is committed to developing the sport in the country hence their sponsorship of the Chombe Tea Trophy.
“As sponsors, we would like to encourage you to keep up with the noble fighting spirit,” Kanthambi said.
Taking their turn Sports Council chair Rashid Nembo and Nam vice chairperson Reen Kumwenda thanked Tambala Food Products for the sponsorship noting that the standards of netball have improved tremendously because of the competition. |
