Triangle resolves wrangle
by Ayam Maeresa, 15 August 2002
The Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique Growth Triangle (ZMM-GT) has resolved differences over the secretariat location.
ZMM-GT Malawi Private Sector Forum secretary general Alfred Osunsanya said in an interview that the issue was resolved at a recent meeting of private sector players in Tete, Mozambique.
Mozambique and Malawi were opposed to Zambia’s demands to host the secretariat in Lusaka, which is way out of the growth triangle zone that covers North-Eastern Zambia, Northern and Central Malawi and Tete in Mozambique.
The two were arguing that Lilongwe is better placed to host the secretariat since it is on the centre of the growth triangle area.
“It was resolved that the secretariat will be temporarily situated at the Zambia Investment Centre in Lusaka for 18 months,” said Osunsanya, adding that the members agreed to convene a meeting in December 2003 to decide the way forward.
Initiated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the concept is a borrowed leaf from Asian nations where it helped speed up development and economic growth.
