That the University of Malawi has taken the initiative to solve its financial woes by exploring ways of generating revenue is a welcome move by the institution.
The University has great potential to generate income. Bunda College of Agriculture demonstrated this when in the past it ran a farm that enabled the institution to feed itself.
Apart from this, one only has to look at the facilities and services that could be turned into a fortune in the other colleges. The College of Medicine, for example, is capable of offering private clinical services, the Polytechnic is already doing a lot that needs strengthening while Chancellor College can make a lot from well coordinated research work, whose proceeds currently goes into individual people’s pockets.
The University is right to complain about underfunding but it would be pointless just to complain instead of making use of the available resources.
But if the University really goes commercial, one thing remains a fact—The institution has an obligation to serve the nation. Commercialisation should, therefore, not be at the expense of the needy but bright students. Let all deserving citizens have a fair share of education facilities.
