Simply fabulous. After be-ing stirred by local ath-letes’ five star show in the recent Kim Marathon event, sponsor of the tournament Suk Young Kim has announced that the competition will now be held twice a year, starting December this year.
To put the icing on the cake, Kim, who is Malawi’s honorary consul to Korea, also announced that he will introduce monthly races which will go with fat prizes.
Amateur Athletics Association of Malawi (AAAM) general secretary Haxon Chapasa said in an interview on Monday Kim has juicy ambitions to see Malawian athletes make it big on the world scene.
“His Excellency Mr. Kim feels the competition will certainly draw the best from Malawian athletes and help them reach greater heights. His medical centre will be sponsoring both events,” Chapasa said.
As if that was not enough, Kim also announced that he is planning to send one of the three top athletes in the previous tournament held in Lilongwe last month which was won by Henry Moyo to the famous Washington Marathon to be held in the US on November 3 this year.
Kim has also asked the three top athletes to submit their CVs in readiness for the Korea Marathon to be held on Seoul on October 27.
On the introduction of the monthly races, Chapasa said the race will be for top 30 athletes across the country and the best 10 will automatically qualify for camp training in preparation for World Championships.
The winner of the full marathon gets K50,000, with the runner-up taking home K30,000 while the third position gets K10,000. Positions four to 20 get prizes ranging from K8,000 to K1,000 each.
Chapasa announced that the winner of the monthly race, which is expected to start soon, will be getting K10,000, runner-up will be getting K7,000 while the third-placed athlete will go home with K5,000. Fourth and fifth positions will attract K3,000 and K2,000 respectively.
There will also be K1,000 consolation prizes each for positions six to 20.
