Council to train local contractors

The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) has embarked on training sessions for road contractors as part of interventions to improve the standards of roads in Malawi.
Executive secretary Jonny Somba has said NCIC realised that the poor quality of roads in Malawi can be attributed to the registration process which allows even unqualified contractors to participate in road construction.
“Those who give work to these contractors have complained that the quality of the roads has been poor. We are going to address the deficiencies through this training programme. This is just a clinic to dress the wounds. We expect to hold a one-year training to heal the wounds completely,” said Somba.
He said NCIC has selected crucial areas that need prompt address and has asked the Polytechnic, Ministry of Works and players in the road construction industry to provide the training.
Council chairman Michael Polela said the future of the construction industry and roads standards in Malawi could be guaranteed only through training.
He said the National Roads Authority (NRA) has improved the condition of most roads in Malawi but the challenge the country has is how the present condition could be maintained.
“This training workshops are aimed at empowering personnel engaged in road construction and rehabilitation works by improving their technical skills through delivery of practical-oriented courses,” he said.
The training sessions have been sponsored by the European Union under the road management support programme.
