Malawian exhibitors who participated in the Zambia International Agriculture and Commercial show under the National Hawkers and Informal Business Association (Nahiba) emerged the third best international exhibitors at the fair.
Nahiba executive director Eva Zulu-Joaquim said in an interview yesterday the first best exhibitors came from Kenya while the second came from the host, Zambia.
She said agricultural products from Universal Industries Limited and Rab Processors Limited impressed the judges most.
“People were so impressed with Malawian products that we made a lot of sales. In fact, business people in Lusaka have asked us to go back with some more products in about two weeks time,” said Joaquim.
She added: “If Malawi can intensify similar agricultural shows then I believe that business can develop in the country. People have good agricultural products but the problem is that they have very little knowledge of agricultural shows”
She said due to lack of knowledge about agricultural shows, Malawian participants did not take with them curios for the show.
“However, I have learned one thing from this show. Never go to a fair late because you never have sufficient preparations. We arrived in Lusaka on the day of the exhibition because our vehicle broke down twice and so we had very little time to prepare,” she said.
Apart from Universal Industries and Rab Processors, Malawi Distilleries, Tea Blenders and Packers, Southern Bottlers, Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha) and four small scale entrepreneurial business women participated in the show which was held from August 1-5.
Some of the items on show were dry chambo, dry usipa, rice, various millet seeds, Likuni Phala, Africa traditional nuts and biscuits, according to Joaquim.
Joaquim also disclosed that Nahiba will participate in another fair in Mozambique from September 3-8.
