Malawi is likely to attract tourists from the Republic of China once the Taiwanese journalists’ 12-day visit to Malawi to explore what the country has in terms of tourism and business bears fruits.
A group of 10 Taiwanese travel magazine reporters and business people arrived in Malawi on Friday to familiarise themselves with Malawi’s tourism potential for documentation.
The group will visit national parks, Lake Malawi and other tourism sites in the country. It will also hold consultations with members of the business community.
“News coverage about Malawi has been very minimal until last month when our president visited Malawi. Many people now want to know more about Malawi,” said leader of delegation Daniel Hu, who is writer for World Geographic Magazine.
Hu said Taiwanese have only known Malawi as an agricultural country and a nation adversely affected by food insecurity.
He said the group’s visit to Malawi will help to sell information about Malawi to the people of Taiwan.
One member representing the business community, Jasmin Cheng, said the visit’s objective is to promote Malawi’s tourism growth potential to Taiwanese investors.
She said Taiwan will hold a tourism exhibition in November this year where the group will take an opportunity to sell Malawi.
“For quite a long time Taiwanese have been going to South Africa for tourism visits. It’s quite boring just visiting one country all the times. Therefore, we hope to sell Malawi in conjunction with South Africa so that when people come to visit that country they can also visit Malawi,” she said.
Ministry of Tourism press and communication officer Patricia Liabuba said the visit by the Taiwanese president has created an interest in Taiwan.
“Traditionally our market has been the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Germany, Holland and the Republic of South Africa. So we want to diversify our market base,” said Liabuba.
Sunbird Tourism Limited, Club Makokola, Nyika Safaris and Central African Wilderness Safaris have sponsored accommodation for the visitors.
