When one hears the name booze den the impression one has is that of a place where patrons do nothing else but drink their heads off, but at Booze Den in Mchinji the story is slightly different.
While some patrons indeed while away their free time on a variety of beers others go there simply to perfect their skill at darts or snooker— sporting activities that have made the place popular not only in Mchinji but also in neighbouring town of Chipata, Zambia.
“We have a good darts team which has participated in a number of competitions organised by the Darts Association of Zambia,” said owner of the place Francis Bulla.
The Booze Den, situated along Mchinji-Mkanda Road also hosts competitions and attracts a good number of Zambian teams.
Apart from darts, the country’s popular musicians in the names of Lucius Banda, Mlaka Maliro, Ben Michael and Charles Sinetre with Allelluya Band have all ever performed at the joint.
“The first to perform here was Charles Nsaku about a year ago,” Bulla, a former site manager of then Oil Company of Malawi, explained.
“I also intend to start sponsoring table tennis competitions. I don’t want this place to be a drinking joint only, but also a place where sportsmen can meet to compete,” he added.
Bulla built Booze Den in 1999 before his retirement from Oilcom and is still upgrading it so that by next year the place will have six self-contained rooms for guests.
