The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs has said last month’s mining exhibition has boosted business for miners and attracted investors to start exploring for gemstones.
Speaking in an interview, senior mining engineer in the department of mines, Atileni Wona, said since Monday last week, about K260,000 worth of gemstones have been exported.
“Following the exhibition, a lot of miners have received orders and several mining managers have told us that the exhibition has helped them a lot as it has enabled them to get markets for their products and some significant volumes of the gemstones have been exported,” said Wona.
Wona said the department has already started receiving prospecting application licences to explore precious stones in some districts.
“For example, Malawi Mining Corporation has expressed an interest to explore Tantalum in Mzimba, Lake Chirwa and Tembani,” he said.
Wona said Allied Procurement Agency Limited last Thursday commissioned a mining project in Salima.
Recently, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs, Harry Thomson announced that two mining companies, Albidon from Australia and Agricola from the United Kingdom are already in the country exploring for gold and base metals in Balaka and Mwanza districts.
