Flames’ star forward Essau Kanyenda will not be part of the squad which is expected to leave for United Kingdom this coming Sunday for training and strength-testing matches.
Kanyenda, who stars for South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Jomo Cosmos, was directed to fly back to Johannesburg on Monday by his boss and coach Jomo Sono.
Cosmos’ locally based representative Ben Chiwaya said yesterday that Kanyenda was urgently needed to join the rest of the Cosmos squad in preparation for the next season.
“Jomo phoned me on Monday morning instructing me to put Essau on the plane in the afternoon so that he could join the rest of the team in pre-season preparations, already he is 10 days late.
“In fact Jomo said he was not aware of the trip to UK,” Chiwaya said.
Flames coach Kim Splidsboel said this was a setback to his plans.
“I wanted to have the entire squad including the professionals in this trip, we needed to train and play friendlies as a team,” he said.
Splidsboel also said he was keeping his fingers crossed that Germany Second Bundesliga side FC Cologne will let Dan Chitsulo join the Flames in UK.
Meanwhile two other South African-based senior players were expected to be informed by their respective clubs yesterday on whether they will be released to join the Flames.
